In this text, we will describe the procedures and combinations that you can use to hard restart your phone, activate recovery mode or DFU mode, on iPhone 8, 8 Plus, X, Xs, Xs Max 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max or XR. After all, these procedures have changed since the days of iPhone 7, 7 Plus!
No matter how you hold your iPhone 8, 8 Plus, X, Xs, Xs Max, 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max or XR in your hands, you’ll never have to guess what you need to press to hard reboot your iPhone or put it into DFU recovery mode to update or reinstall Firmware on your device. That’s probably one of the reasons that brought you to our site.
Now we’ll show you how to force a hard reboot, activate recovery mode or DFU mode on iPhone 8, 8 Plus, X, Xs, Xs Max, 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max or XR.
Before we dive into the details, let’s take another look at the button names using iPhone Xs as an example. Now, the power/lock button is called the Side button. We’ll continue to use this term to refer to it. The volume up plus (+) / volume down minus (-) buttons remain unchanged.
The circular button, or Home button, that you were used to on earlier models hasn’t appeared on iPhone X for obvious reasons, but it’s still there on iPhone 8/8 Plus. Still, the button combinations for both iPhone models are identical to those on the X, Xs, etc.
How to hard restart iPhone 8, 8 Plus, X, Xs, Xs Max, XR, 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max
Let’s say your iPhone freezes, or some features start to fail, or it doesn’t turn on at all. To return it to a working state, you need to perform a forced restart. Forget (if you knew before) any other button combinations and follow the exact step-by-step instructions below.
The new iPhone restartbutton combination requires a little more manual dexterity. If it doesn’t work the first time, try again.
STEP 1 – Press and quickly release the volume up button plus (+). Then press and quickly release the volume down button minus (-).
STEP 2 – Now hold down the side button until the apple appears on the iPhone screen.
You must press the buttons in this exact combination!
So much for the hard reboot. Didn’t it work? Try to be more nimble and try again!
Recovery mode on iPhone X and older
Now let’s take a look at the options for when to activate Recovery Mode on iPhone X and older models. We will do this as follows:
STEP 1 – You must have the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer.
STEP 2 – If iTunes is running, close it. Connect your iPhone to your computer with a cable and start iTunes.
STEP 3 – Now follow the same procedure as in the previous section. Press and release the volume up button plus (+), then press and release the volume down button minus (-)
STEP 4 – Press and hold the side button until a picture of the cable and iTunes icons appear on the iPhone screen. If the screen first shows an apple, don’t be surprised.
Hold the side button until you receive confirmation that recovery mode has been successfully activated.
STEP 5 – A corresponding message should appear in the iTunes window offering to Restore (with all data loss) or Update (without data loss) the iPhone firmware.
For iPhone X and older devices in recovery mode, that’s it, now we move on to the most difficult DFU mode.
DFU mode on iPhone Xs,Xs max, XR, 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max
We have reached the DFU (Device Firmware Update) mode. If a forced reboot didn’t help and recovery mode is not activated, DFU mode is the last option you can try at home without service.
When restoring the device in DFU mode, the iOs operating system will be installed on the phone “from scratch“. All information stored on the phone will be lost.
DFU mode can help in cases where the iPhone goes into a cyclic loop during the boot phase or periodically displays a blue/red “death” screen.
It is highly recommended that you read all the steps below carefully to understand the order in which and for how long you need to press this or that button. To enter DFU mode on iPhone 8, 8 Plus, X, Xs, Xs Max, XR, 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max you need to do the following:
STEP 1 – Connect your iPhone to your computer and launch iTunes. Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes.
STEP 2 – Press and release the plus (+) volume up button, then press and release the minus (-) volume down button, then press and hold the side button until the screen disappears.
STEP 3 – Press and hold the side button and the volume down (minus) button simultaneously for 5 seconds.
STEP 4 – Then release the side button while holding down the minus (-) button for another 15 seconds.
STEP 5 – A message should appear in the iTunes window that the iPhone has been detected in recovery mode. The screen on the iPhone should remain off.
STEP 6 – If nothing happened or something appeared on the iPhone screen after the above steps, you miscalculated the time in seconds. So go back to STEP 1 and try again.
That’s all. In fact, activating DFU mode on iPhone Xs and newer is the same as on older iPhone models, but the restart and recovery mode is already new.
